In this instance if W. Denny is rightly informed the bearer of the letter from the Governor of Hong Kong has not been heard of. If so, the Gov[ernor]'s intervention has been ignored and had Mr Pitman seen the minister & Council would have been ignored & this in China is not to the desired [effect].
Even if true to the fact stated, I should be careful in anything to M. Hennessy not to write in a tone of censure. All other considerations apart I need much information from him in the Spring. But I have thought it right to be made to know what I had heard, & through what Channel; and this the more that Mr Forrest's report was about to be added to Y[ours].
